Today is National Milk Day. Did you know that in 1863 French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization, a method of killing harmful bacteria in beverages and food products. Milk was first sold in glass bottles by American Doctor Hervey Thatcher of New York City. He called them ‘Thatcher’s Common Sense Milk Jar,’ which was sealed with a waxed paper disk. Later, in 1932, plastic-coated paper milk cartons were introduced commercially as a consequence of their invention by Victor W. Farris.

On this day in history on January 3, 1959, President Eisenhower signs a special proclamation admitting the territory of Alaska into the Union as the 49th and largest state. Originally settled by Russia it was sold to the United States in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars. Even though it only cost 2 cents an acre it was considered a ridiculous purchase by many in Congress. Nevertheless, the Senate ratified purchase of the tremendous landmass, one-fifth the size of the rest of the United States. The discovery of gold in 1898 brought a rapid influx of people to the territory. Alaska, rich in natural resources, has been contributing to American prosperity ever since.

On this day in history President Benjamin Harrison welcomes Alice Sanger as the first female White House staffer on this day in 1890. It would still be another 30 years until women would see the 19th amendment give them the right to vote. This appointment of the first woman staffer in the White House was seen as a great move toward equality.

It is feeling festive in the Middle School as the doors are being decorated. Attention students, it is your responsibility to have a pass to give to the teacher whose class you are leaving. The teacher whose door you are decorating should give you that pass or send an email.  Students should not be allowed to leave ac labs or lunch without the pass or email.

Attention skiers and boarders!  The last day to sign up for Ski Club is December 22nd!  Transportation forms are available in Mr. McDowell's room and Mr. Crocker's Room.  If you want to shred some deep pow with your friends once the snow comes, make sure you sign up for ski club now!

Ho Ho Ho is the season for holiday cheer!  Hopefully you have found a teacher door to decorate. Due to meetings this week and the end of the five week marking period the decorating contest has been extended until Tuesday, December 19. So get in the holiday spirit, join the team and start decorating.

On this day in history in 1941, 360 Japanese warplanes descended on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and launched a ferocious assault.  The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States into World War II. Much of the Pacific fleet was rendered useless: Five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and seven other ships were sunk or severely damaged, and more than 200 aircraft were destroyed. A total of 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 were wounded, many while valiantly attempting to counter the attack. President Roosevelt would address congress the following day and declare that December 7, 1941 would be a “date which will live in infamy”.

Today is National Dictionary Day! Celebrate by learning a little bit of dictionary history and about Noah Webster:     In 1806, American Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. In 1807 Webster began compiling an expanded and fully comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language; it took twenty-seven years to complete and had 70,000 words. To complete the dictionary Webster learned twenty-six languages, including Old English (Anglo-Saxon), German, Greek, Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Arabic and Sanskrit. Webster completed his dictionary during his year abroad in Paris, France, at the University of Cambridge.  His book contained seventy thousand words, of which twelve thousand had never appeared in a published dictionary before.

Today is History: In 1792 the cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. 8 years later, President John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, became the first president to reside in the executive mansion, which soon became known as the “White House” because it's white-gray Virginia freestone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings. The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation’s capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic.

Today is National Chocolate Milk Day. An Irish physician named Sir Hans Sloane is credited as the inventor of chocolate milk in 1687. He had traveled to Jamaica where they had been making a hot chocolate recipe from chocolate shavings, hot milk and cinnamon since 1494. He brought back the chocolate milk recipe and tweaked it a bit. It was then manufactured and sold as medicine. So grab a cold glass of chocolate milk today and celebrate the invention of chocolate milk over 300 years ago.

Today is International Day of Peace. The United Nations’ International Day of Peace is celebrated on September 21 each year to recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace. The International Day of Peace is also a day of ceasefire – personal or political. The peace dove flying with an olive branch in its beak is one of the most commonly featured symbols for the day. Yesterday was National Constitution Day. This commemorates the anniversary of the day 39 delegates signed the United States Constitution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Constitution established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens.  In the 230 years since the Constitution was signed America has stretched across an entire continent and its population and economy have expanded more than the document’s framers likely ever could have envisioned. Through all the changes, the Constitution has endured and adapted. Today, the original Constitution is on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C

On this day in history in 1985 President Reagan challenged Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. The wall had been built following Germany’s defeat in World War II. It divided Berlin into East and West. Russia controlled Eastern Germany and used the wall to keep people from escaping to Western Germany. This speech by then President Reagan brought hope to the people of east Germany who 2 years later saw the wall crumble and the country united.

Today is World Environment Day. Started in 1974 by the United Nations it centers around a different theme every year. The theme for 2017, ‘Connecting People to Nature’, urges us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and to think about how we are part of nature and how closely we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and enjoy this vital relationship.

On this day in history in 1980 Mount St. Helens in Washington erupted, causing a massive avalanche and killing 57 people. Ash from the volcanic eruption fell as far away as Minnesota. Millions of trees were scorched and burned by the hot air alone. When the glacier atop the mountain melted, a massive mudslide wiped out homes and dammed up rivers throughout the area. Magma, at 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit, flowed for miles.
